Quote Markets member reviews XPL crash on Hyperliquid and HLP liquidation losses

Quote Markets team member filo published a post reviewing the XPL flash crash on Hyperliquid, outlining how a cluster of linked wallets reduced margin before the selloff and how that fed into losses for the platform’s liquidation vault. According to the review, 16 wallets with funding or trading links withdrew about $2.0386 million in margin before the sharp drop, leaving HLP to absorb a large XPL long position. HLP eventually took over roughly 160 million XPL and sold the position over about 75 minutes, booking a loss of around $555,787, equal to 55.6% of the liquidation vault’s own funds. The review said 14 of the 16 wallets showed links in funding sources or trading behavior, while 12 wallets that withdrew early accounted for 90.7% of the position later taken over by HLP. At the same time, the investigation said it found no direct evidence that those wallets caused the XPL plunge, and it could not determine whether they hedged on other venues. It also said the 16 wallets did not profit from the incident on Hyperliquid, instead posting combined losses of about $711,000.

Bitcoin, Ether and AI stock perpetuals tumble briefly before rebounding over the weekend

Bitcoin and Ether saw a sharp but short-lived sell-off over the weekend, while several AI stock perpetual contracts also dropped as much as 5% within minutes before bouncing back. Bitcoin briefly fell by about $1,000 and then rebounded $1,200. Ether slid from $2,420 to $2,360 before recovering to $2,410. The move took place while U.S. equity markets were closed, with no obvious news catalyst identified. According to the report cited by Techub News, the sudden volatility wiped out millions of dollars in leveraged positions. Market commentary described the move either as a weekend shakeout or a warning sign tied to fears of a potential "Black Monday." At the same time, discussion of "Black Monday" surged on X. Kobeissi Letter pushed back on that narrative, saying such crowded expectations often lead to the opposite outcome, and predicted the S&P 500 could soon reach a record 8,000.

Bitcoin slides to a one-month low as crypto selling intensifies ahead of 2025 flash-crash anniversary

Crypto prices fell sharply this week as the market approached the first anniversary of the Oct. 10, 2025 flash crash. According to CoinDesk, bitcoin dropped 4% over the past 24 hours to just above $80,000, its lowest level in about a month, and has fallen more than 8% since nearly touching $87,000 four days earlier. The pullback was broader and steeper outside BTC, with ether and XRP each down about 6% on the day and solana off 9%, while all three have posted double-digit losses over the past week. CoinDesk said the anniversary of last year’s violent sell-off is landing at a time when traders are already dealing with several macro and policy pressures. On Oct. 10, 2025, bitcoin fell from roughly $122,000 to $105,000, with much of the move taking place within minutes during thin U.S. Friday evening trading, after setting a record above $126,000 only days before. The report also pointed to rising oil prices, higher interest rates, regulatory uncertainty after the failure of the Clarity Act, and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections as factors weighing on risk appetite. Even so, some institutions still see a constructive longer-term path for digital assets. A State Street survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners and wealth managers found that 51% expect digital assets to become mainstream within five years, up from 11% in 2024. Institutions currently hold an average of 11% of portfolios in digital assets and expect that share to increase over the next three years.

Bitcoin’s ‘Bart Simpson’ Setup Puts $75,800 in Focus, but a Flash Crash Is Not Confirmed

Bitcoin’s late-August rally has revived one of crypto’s favorite chart memes: the “Bart Simpson” pattern. After climbing nearly 25% from about $64,420 on August 19 to almost $80,700 on August 25, BTC spent the following week moving sideways and giving back part of the move, last trading near $77,470. That price shape—an abrupt rise, a flat top, and a partial retracement—has traders debating whether a sharp reversal is next. According to Decrypt, the current four-hour chart does not yet point to a confirmed flash crash. RSI stands at 44.8, bearish-leaning but not deeply oversold, while ADX is 22, below the 25 level many traders use to confirm a real trend. The Squeeze Momentum indicator is flashing bearish with momentum fading, suggesting a larger move may be building, though direction is still unresolved. At the same time, the 50-period exponential moving average remains above the 200-period moving average, preserving a bullish trend structure. For a true Bart Simpson breakdown to complete, Bitcoin would need to break below $75,800 and rapidly retrace the full August rally toward the $64,000 area within hours, implying a move of roughly 17%. Decrypt also outlines a slower bearish scenario: a descending channel that could take BTC toward $62,000 over about eight weeks into late October. September seasonality, a 64% market-implied chance of a Fed rate hike on September 15-16, $236 million in spot Bitcoin ETF outflows on Tuesday, and higher oil prices are all adding to the debate, though none alone confirms a crash.

Jiang Zhuoer Says Market Saw a Brief Flash Crash, Urges Isolated Margin for High-Leverage Altcoin Trades

ChainCatcher reported that Jiang Zhuoer, founder of Bitcoin mining pool B.TOP, said around 13:10 Beijing time today, the market saw a brief flash crash. BTC, ETH and several altcoins all printed sharp wicks, while non-crypto assets such as crude oil also moved violently for a short period. Jiang warned traders not to hold large high-leverage altcoin longs in a single unified account, saying a sudden 50% drop in one coin could leave the account short of margin and trigger liquidations across other assets. He recommended isolated margin for high-leverage altcoin trading so positions are separated and one extreme move does not affect the whole account. He added that isolated margin is less convenient, but in an extreme move, only one position would be lost, reducing the risk of the entire account being wiped out at once.

Binance Fires Back: October Flash Crash Was Macro Liquidation Spiral, Not System Failure

Binance published a blog post rejecting claims that its systems caused the October 2025 flash crash. It argues macro shocks, high leverage and liquidity withdrawal were the culprits, and reveals over $328 million in user compensation. Independent data from Kaiko points to oracle failures that exacerbated the collapse, but Binance insists the three-token depeg occurred after most liquidations.
